Walter A. McPherson Jr., 77, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, in the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. He was the husband of Jeanne (Cornille) McPherson. They have been married for the past 56 years.

Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Walter A. and Josephine (Kotwica) McPherson Sr. Walter resided in Cumberland for the past 50 years.

He proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy veteran, completing two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. As a member of an elite combat unit known as the Black Berets, he patrolled the perilous rivers of Vietnam with courage and unwavering dedication. His service reflected not only his bravery but also his deep sense of duty and honor. The strength and resilience he demonstrated in uniform remained a defining part of his character throughout his life.

Walter was a graduate of Bryant University, magna cum laude, with both a bachelor's degree and master's degree.

Walter had a lifelong passion for sports that touched every part of his life. A proud New England Patriots season ticket holder since 1971, he cheered on his team through every high and low with unwavering loyalty. He not only loved watching all kinds of sports but also gave back as a dedicated coach in the Cumberland Babe Ruth League, where he mentored young athletes with enthusiasm and care. His commitment to the game extended beyond the field—he was instrumental in founding the Senior Babe Ruth League in Cumberland, creating opportunities for older players to continue competing and connecting through baseball. A fierce and savvy fantasy football competitor, he was known for routinely dominating his league year after year. His leadership, sportsmanship, and love for the game left a lasting legacy in the community he cared so deeply about.

Walter worked as a sales and marketing manager for several national companies, where he played a key role in helping develop new products and bringing them to market. His career gave him the opportunity to travel, including time spent working in China and Mexico.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Kimberly Paquette (Marc Audette) of Smithfield, and Michael McPherson (Lauren) of Lincoln. His five grandchildren: Ashley Casinelli, Kaitlynne, Sean, and Hailey McPherson and Noah Gagnon, along with several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Walter's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 8 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a Prayer Service at 10 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. Burial will follow in RI Veterans Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter.
