Walter enjoyed playing bingo, dancing, fishing at Joe’s Pond in Vermont, and attending military reunions.

Walter E. Johnson, 83, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Stillwater Nursing Home in Smithfield. He was the beloved husband of over 25 years to the late Kathleen Ann (Kenney) Johnson, who passed away in 2005.

Born in Pawtucket, RI, on March 1, 1943, he was the son of the late Frederick Johnson and Lois (Parker) Johnson.

Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963, attaining the rank of Specialist while serving with the 709th Military Police Company.

For many years, Walter worked as a professional truck driver. His career included employment with Jarvis Transportation and WSA Trucking in Pawtucket, where he worked for approximately 20 years. Following his career in trucking, he worked for approximately 12 years as a greeter at Walmart in North Attleboro, a position he greatly enjoyed.

He was the beloved husband of over 25 years to the late Kathleen Ann (Kenney) Johnson.

Walter earned an Associate Degree in Business Management from Johnson & Wales in 1978. He was also affiliated with the Woonsocket Elks - Lodge 850.

In his leisure time, Walter enjoyed playing bingo, dancing, fishing at Joe’s Pond in Vermont, and attending military reunions. He especially valued the friendships he formed throughout the years and found great enjoyment in the familiar routines, gatherings, and simple pleasures of everyday life.

Walter leaves his son, Jonathan W. Johnson and his wife Carey Nason of Hermon, Maine; Kathleen A. Rodrigues of Rhode Island; and Erica R. Pina and her husband, Brian A. Pina, of Cumberland. He was predeceased by his son Sean P. Reilly. He also leaves six grandchildren, Mitchell Thomas, Briana Pina, Alexandra Pina, Cayden Reilly, Jonathan Reilly, and Francis Reilly; and his great-granddaughter, Lucienne Thomas. Walter was the brother of Thomas C. Johnson of Rhode Island and Gerald Johnson and his wife Wendy Johnson of Pawtucket, and the late Frederick Johnson, William Johnson, and Jean Gilbert.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Walter’s Life Celebration to be held with Visitation on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 from 5 to 8 PM and continue on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at 10 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A prayer service will be held at 11 AM in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket.
