Obituary

CUMBERLAND

Suzette Luiza Gouveia e Costa, 88, of Cumberland passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at home.

Born in Penalva do Castelo, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Antonio Costa and Lucrecia Gouveia.  She moved to this country in 1978, settling in Cumberland.

Mrs. Costa was employed as Machine Operator for Texas Instruments for over 26 years.

Suzette loved nothing more than a good conversation, especially one about politics, world events, or the places she knew well or dreamed of going. She had an extraordinary knowledge of geography and could effortlessly talk about countries, borders, and history, always eager to understand how the world fit together. Her curiosity was endless, and she encouraged those around her to think bigger, look farther, and stay informed. Just as constant was her lifelong love for Benfica—a devotion that never faded and brought her immense joy. Above all, she was a devoted Catholic whose faith guided her life, rooted in her belief in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and her deep devotion to Our Lady of Fátima. Her faith was something she lived every day, providing her with strength, comfort, and an unwavering trust that shaped who she was.

She leaves her two nephews, Joseph Almeida and Victor Coelho, both of Cumberland; her lifetime friends, Maria Carvalho and Luis Carvalho, both of Cumberland; and her godson, Luis Carvalho of Pawtucket.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Suzette's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 4 to 7 PM and continue on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 9 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland.   Burial will take place at the Town Cemetery of Lumiar, in Portugal.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a charity meaningful to you.
