Richard J. Engert, 86, formerly of Cumberland, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023 in the Care Dimensions Hospice House, Lincoln, MA. He was the husband of the late Catherine (Taran) Engert.
Born in Manhattan, NY., he was the son of the late Albert and Jean (Klein) Engert. Richard resided in Cumberland for more than 53 years.
He was a US Army Engineering Corp Veteran.
Richard was a communicant of St. John Vianney Church, Cumberland. He spent many years as a religious education teacher for the parish, along with being a member of the Men's Club.
He was former Cumberland Zoning Board member.
He was a gifted painter using both watercolors and oil paints, he enjoyed playing bocci, and was also an avid bowler. In his younger years he enjoyed working in his gardens but most of all spending time by the pool with his family.
Prior to his retirement he consulted for various companies including Texas Instruments, and was previously employed at Northrop, FRAM, Norelco and Valley Gas. In his younger years he also worked for the New York City telephone company.
Richard is survived by his four children, son, Richard A. Engert of Killingly, CT, and his fiancé Lori Geilich, son, Clark P. Engert and daughter in law, Pamela of Acton, MA: daughter, Christine M. Walzer and son in law Nick of Walpole, MA and daughter, Lee Ann Chavez and son in law, Mark of Framingham, MA. His brother, Bern Engert, and his wife Joan of Long Island, NY. Five grandchildren Ryan, Craig, Trevor, Marissa and Madison, his sister-in-law, Joan Taran of Wappinger Falls, NY., along with several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Richard's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, from 5 PM to 8 PM, and continuing on Wednesday September 27, 2023, at 9 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM in St. John Vianney Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Road Cumberland. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Blvd. Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886. or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
