Pope Francis, 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, Dies at 88.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope and the first from Latin America, died on the morning of April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. He passed away at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City following complications from a prolonged respiratory illness. His death ends a historic 12-year papacy defined by humility, reform, and a steadfast focus on mercy and inclusion.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was the son of Italian immigrants. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1958 and was ordained a priest in 1969. Known for his simple lifestyle and deep empathy for the poor, Bergoglio rose through the ranks of the Church to become Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001.

On March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Bergoglio was elected as the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He chose the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, reflecting his vision of a Church for the poor, for peace, and for the care of creation.

However, his tenure was not without controversy. His efforts to reform the Roman Curia and address the sexual abuse crisis in the Church met resistance. While applauded for his tone of mercy on issues such as LGBTQ+ inclusion and divorce, his refusal to change doctrine left some critics on both sides of the ideological divide unsatisfied.

Pope Francis's final public appearance was on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, when he offered a blessing from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica despite visible signs of frailty.

World leaders have paid tribute to him as a force for peace, humility, and justice. In his native Argentina, President Javier Milei declared three days of national mourning. French President Emmanuel Macron called him "a voice for the voiceless," and King Charles III remembered him as "a moral compass in an era of uncertainty."

Pope Francis requested a simple burial and will be laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a church he visited regularly throughout his papacy.
