Peter S. Lannigan, 92 of Cumberland passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 6, 2025, with his family by his side at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut. He was the beloved husband of Barbara A. Lannigan to whom he had been married for 64 years at the time of her passing.

Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Albert and Irene (Cyr) Lannigan. He moved to Valley Falls during childhood and resided in Cumberland for most of his life.

Pete graduated from St. Raphael's Academy, Pawtucket, attended Providence College but left early to serve in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge, he was employed at Pascale Landscape Construction during his early career and then as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years.

Pete was a man of his time and place. He prioritized his family and appreciated the simple things in life. With paternal roots on a farm in Prince Edward Island, Canada, he was naturally drawn to the outdoors. He chose a walking route with the U.S. Postal Service, happily serving his hometown and visiting his mom daily for lunch. His home was his haven, and his days had a steady rhythm. Upon retirement, he joined a fitness center and also became a familiar figure in the Diamond Hill area covering three miles each morning; his signature walk could be spotted miles away. Hiking excursions in the White Mountains with his sons and friends were a regular occurrence with his 60th birthday celebrated on Mt. Washington. He meticulously landscaped his property, with never a weed in sight, puttering around the yard for hours on end. He cultivated his garden, which increased in size each year, sharing his abundant crop of tomatoes, eggplant, green beans and blueberries with family and neighbors. His interests were varied and diverse. His knowledge of geography was expansive, and he loved locating faraway places on his oversized globe. He amassed an impressive stamp collection, completed crossword puzzles daily, followed the Patriots and Bruins, and listened to an extensive array of music, from classical and opera to country and Broadway show tunes. You could count the clock by his afternoon nap and evening tea.

He grew up playing hockey, knew the ponds of Cumberland like the back of his hand and was nicknamed "Blades" by his buddies for his speed on the ice and goal scoring. He imparted his love for the game to his sons Peter and Michael, taking them skating locally and later coaching their hockey teams. He adored his four grandchildren Kelly, Sean, Grace, and Ava and was invested in all their interests. It was a tradition to gift him a college baseball cap, which became the favorites in his collection because they were from the kids. His love extended to his daughters-in-law Karen and Beth and was always appreciative of their homemade meals. Pete's calming presence and sense of priorities that exuded a simpler time was instilled by a deep faith and is an example to all he loved. He also had a fun side and great sense of humor he shared with family and friends. His legacy will endure. May his soul rest in peace, reunited with Barbara, and in the arms of God, the Father.

He leaves his two sons, Peter S. Lannigan and his wife Karen of Easton, CT and Michael F. Lannigan and his wife Beth of Holden, MA; his four beloved grandchildren, Kelly Lannigan, Sean Lannigan, Grace Lannigan and Ava Lannigan; his brother-in-law Joseph Billington; as well as nieces and nephews, Joseph Billington, Janet Eckman, Linda Flues, Matthew Billington, Nicholas Palma, and Christian Branson.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Pete's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 9 AM to 10:30 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM in the St. Aidan Church, Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland.  Burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
