Martha Veronica (Brady) Descoteaux, 88, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023, at Smithfield Woods in Smithfield, RI, with her family by her side. She was the devoted wife of the late Francis John Descoteaux.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Senator James J. Brady and the late Catherine (Barry) Brady. She resided in Huntington Beach, California, and Cumberland, RI, for most of her life.
She was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, receiving a bachelor's degree in Home Economics. Following her college education, she entered the United States Marines through the 13th Women Officers Training Class, Junior Course Women Marine Detachment.
Mrs. Descoteaux was employed as a teacher in Rhode Island and California. She was also the director of KinderCare in Fountain Valley, CA. In retirement, she cared for the children of many friends and family members.
Martha was a communicant of St. Aidan/St. Patrick Parish and was an active CCD teacher. She was an avid sports enthusiast and a passionate Boston sports fan. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, and gardening and was a Girl Scouts and Brownies leader. Those who loved her will remember her selflessness, her value toward education, her intelligence, and her sense of humor, but most of all the love she shared for her family.
She leaves her daughter, Lynn Fitzgerald of Cumberland; her son John Descoteaux of Huntington Beach, CA; her three beloved grandchildren, Danielle, Jake, and Hope, and their father Ray Fitzgerald, all of Cumberland; her sister, Catherine Brady of Cumberland; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Marie Brady, Annetta Brady Comolli, Joseph I. Brady, James Brady Jr., Paul Brady, Matthew Brady, and John Brady.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Martha's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Monday, October 9, 2023, from 4 TO 7 PM and continue on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 9 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM in St. Aidan Church, Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
At Martha's request, kindly omit all flowers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Crossroads Rhode Island, 160 Broad St, Providence, RI 02903, Anchor Recovery Center, 890 Centerville Rd, Warwick, RI 02886, or to the Special Olympics RI, 370 George Washington Hwy, Smithfield, RI 02917.
