Marie E. Murphy, 91, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024, in Mt Saint Rita Health Center, Cumberland. She was the wife of James J. Murphy Sr. They have been married for the past 65 years.

Born in North Providence, she was the daughter of the late Randolph and Mary (Monk) Chew. Marie has resided in Cumberland for the past 45 years, previously residing in North Providence.

Marie enjoyed doing word searches in her spare time and also watching her favorite soap opera's on ABC especially General Hospital. She was a very kind and gentle woman.

She was employed as an operator for the former New England Telephone for seven years after high school and later after her children were grown up, she worked as a receptionist for Hanover Insurance Co., however Marie's children were her whole life and her greatest joy and career.

In addition to her husband, she leaves her three sons: James J. Murphy Jr., and his wife Robin; Kevin J. Murphy; and Michael J. Murphy all of Cumberland. Her two daughters: Mary Ann Murphy and her husband Michael Downs of Port Charlotte, FL., and Elizabeth Caldera and her husband Sam of Lincoln, her three grandchildren: Patrick, and Christopher Caldera and James Downs along with her brother, Rev. Randolph Chew of Charlestown. She was also the sister of the late Barbara Morvan.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Marie's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 10 AM to 11 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 11 AM in the Historic St. Joseph Church, 1303 Mendon Road Cumberland. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the RI Special Olympics, 370 George Washington Hwy., Smithfield, RI 02917.
