CUMBERLAND

NEVES, Maria L., 102, of Cumberland, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Serafim D. Neves and they have been married for the past 70 years.

Born in Quiras, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Anibal and Deolinda (Diegues) Neves. She moved to this country in 1969, settling in Central Falls and then moving to Cumberland for most of her life.

Mrs. Neves was employed as a packer at the former Health-Tex Inc. for over 25 years, until her retirement. Previously she was employed by Peterson Puritan for many years.

Maria was a communicant of the Our Lady of Fatima Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, but most of all she enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those who love her will remember her as a large presence in the family, the matriarch, even though she was small in stature.

In addition to her beloved husband, she leaves her daughter, Isabel Pereira and her husband John of Cumberland; her two grandsons, Neil Pereira and Ryan Pereira and his wife Mareli, all of Cumberland; her two siblings, Jose Neves and Alice Maldonado, both of Cumberland; her great-grandchildren, Ariana, Adrian and Mason; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Vitorino Neves, Lucia Gomes, Francisco Neves, Antonia Neves, Idalina Correi, Antonio Neves and Anibal Neves.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Maria's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Sunday, January 15, 2023 from 2 to 4 PM and continue on TUESDAY, January 17, at 10 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
