Margaret J. Harty, 89, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024, in the RI Hospital, Providence, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of John A. Harty. They have been married for the past 63 years.
Born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Nora (Flynn) Johnson. Margaret left Ireland in 1956 to settle in the United States, she has resided in Cumberland for the past 60 years.
Margaret leaves a legacy of compassion, generosity, and selflessness. Proud of her Irish heritage, she celebrated it in many ways, from her stories and traditions to her delicious homemade Irish scones and soda bread, which brought comfort and joy to her family and friends. A talented knitter, she lovingly created baby clothing for unwed mothers, offering them warmth and care during challenging times. Her dedication to helping others extended to her work with Al-Anon, where she counseled and supported those in need, always providing a listening ear and heartfelt advice. She also found peace and joy in walks at the beach, cherishing the beauty of the ocean and the serenity it brought her. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, Margaret will be remembered for her gentle spirit, boundless empathy, and the countless lives she touched through her acts of love and service.
She was employed by the former Narragansett Electric for many years until her retirement. Previously she was employed by the former American Universal Insurance Co.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Stephen E. Harty of Cumberland, Kevin J. Harty and his wife Kristine of Lincoln, Daniel J. Harty and his wife Carol of Smithfield. Her grandson Ryan J. Harty of Lincoln. Her sister Kathleen "Kay" Kenney of Warwick, and her brother Fergus Johnson of Ireland, along with several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late: Nora Collins, Rosaleen Kane, and William "Willie" Johnson.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Margaret's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Monday, January 6, 2025, from 9 AM to 10:30 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM in St. Joan of Arc Church, 3357 Mendon Road Cumberland. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 1 State Street Unit 200 Providence, RI 02908.
