Manuel S. Oliveira, 86, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence, surrounded by his loving family and listening to his favorite Benfica Soccer team, as they secured a win. He was the husband of the late Maria C. (Sequeira) Oliveira.
Born in Freixo da Serra, Portugal, he was the son of the late Joao and Amelia (Tente Guerra) Oliveira. He came to this country in 1974 settling in Central Falls and then Cumberland in 1985.
A proud veteran, he served honorably in the Portuguese Army.
Manuel was a devoted Benfica soccer fan and a beloved member of Clube Juventude Lusitana in Cumberland, where he shared many joyful moments with friends. A communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Cumberland, Manuel will be warmly remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his deep loyalty, and his strong connection to his heritage. He found great pleasure in making wine and aguardente, tending to his garden, and taking leisurely walks.
He was a machine operator employed by American Insulated Wire, Co., for more than 30 years, until his retirement.
He is survived by his children: Joaquim Oliveira and his wife (Maria), Antonio A. Oliveira and his wife (Emilia), Angelina Medeiros and her husband (Ricardo) all of Cumberland. Joao Oliveira and his companion (Sally Junkins) of Attleboro. His three brothers: Joaquim Cunha, Angelo Oliveira, and Antonio Oliveira all of Cumberland. His sister Bernadette Ferreira of Portugal. His five grandchildren: Nelson Oliveira and his wife Briana, Nicholas Oliveira, Melissa Oliveira and her companion Zack Walker, Daniel Oliveira, and Nathan Medeiros, one great-granddaughter Maeve Oliveira, along with several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Jose Oliveira, and brother of the late Celestino Cunha.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Manuel's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 4 PM to 7 PM and continuing on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 10 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1 Fatima Drive Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Hope Hospice & Palliative Care, 1085 North Main Street Providence, RI 02904.
