Leon M. Palmer Sr., 83, a lifelong resident of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at HopeHealth in Providence. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean B. (Crowley) Palmer. He was also the husband of the late Janet (Joseph) Palmer
Born and raised in Cumberland, Leon was the son of the late James N. and Geneva R. (Lambert) Palmer.
Following high school, Leon answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army Reserves, proudly serving during the Vietnam era. His commitment to service and community remained an important part of his life.
Leon spent his working years as a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 251 in East Providence. He valued the friendships and camaraderie he built throughout his years as a Teamster.
Deeply rooted in the Cumberland community, Leon was a former member of St. John Episcopal Church in Cumberland. He was also a member of the JK Club in Pawtucket and American Legion Post 14 in Cumberland. A lifelong Cumberland resident, Leon treasured the community he called home and, above all, the many years shared with his family and friends.
He leaves his children, Leon M. Palmer Jr. of Cranston, David A. Palmer of Warwick, Lisa M. Cater of Seattle, Washington, Gary F. DeCorte Jr. and his wife, Tracy, of North Providence, and Paul M. DeCorte and his wife, Melinda, of North Providence. He also leaves his sister, Deborah Mulhern and her husband Richard of Cumberland; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Pauline Palmer, Ronald L. Palmer, Frances Palmer, Gertrude Deseautels, James Palmer Sr., Eileen Levesque, and Karen Harrop.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Leon's Life Celebration to be held with Visitation on Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 5 to 8 PM and continue on Friday, August 21, 2026 at 10 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A prayer service will be held at 11 AM. Burial with military honors will follow at the Historic St. John Cemetery, Mendon Road, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leon's memory to HopeHealth, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
