CUMBERLAND

Kenneth H. Luther, 84, of Cumberland, RI passed away on Friday, June 7th 2024 at Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, RI following a brief illness.

Ken was born in Providence in 1940 to the late Grover and Louise (Howard) Luther; he was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.
Following his graduation from Cumberland High School in 1958, Ken entered the U.S. Navy and served honorably from 1959 through 1967. He served as an Aviation Electrician onboard the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier—the USS Enterprise and later aboard the USS Intrepid. As part of Operation Sea Orbit in 1964, he circumnavigated the world crossing the equator in four different locations and the International Date line once.
Ken was the owner and operator of Luther Roofing for over forty years. He was known for his professional service and being hands on personally measuring roofs up until his late sixties.

In his younger years, Ken was an avid softball player and coach. He led Luther Roofing to numerous State Championships and tournament wins across the New England area. He was a generous sponsor to youth hockey, baseball, and soccer teams in the Cumberland and Pawtucket area. He would often throw hundreds of extra balls before Little League practices to anyone who wanted to show up early or stay late. Ken was an extreme fan of Tom Petty and followed his tours in the 1970s. He was also a charter member of the Garfield Social Club in Central Falls. One year prior to the birth of his son, Ken found sobriety and was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous where he sponsored hundreds of people throughout their own journey; he maintained 34 years of sobriety prior to his death.

Ken was a 3rd generation New York Yankees fan, and as long as the Yankees finished ahead of the Red Sox, he was happy. Ken was a season ticket holder for the Boston Bruins in the 1980s with his favorite player being Cam Neely. Those his knew him remember his strong work ethic, willingness to help others, and the love he had for his son Kameron—he never missed one of his practices or games.

Ken leaves his son Kameron K. Luther of North Attleboro; his daughters, Lori Luther and Carla Lebeau; and his former spouses Kathleen Kelley and Diane DeCrosta. Ken also leaves many cousins and longtime former partner Karen Bergevine.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Ken's Celebration of life with Visiting Hours on Thursday, June 13th from 4-7PM and continuing on Friday, June 14th, 2024 at 10AM at JJ Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt 122, Cumberland, RI. A prayer service will be held at 11AM at JJ Duffy Funeral Home with a procession to Arnold Mills Cemetery, Cumberland, RI for a burial service with military honors.
