Julia M. Freitas, 96, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, passed away on September 10, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on February 16, 1928, in Calheta de Nesquim, Pico, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Sebastião and Maria Helena (Capinha) Almeida. She was the loving wife of the late Ermelindo Freitas, to whom she was married for 55 years.
She is survived by her loving daughter and best friend, Maria Eduina Carvalho, and her husband, Ramiro, of Pawtucket. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, or "meus amores" (my loves) as she affectionately called them, Andrea Medeiros and her husband, Helder, of Boca Raton, Florida, and Steven Carvalho and his wife, Aleethia, of Missouri City, Texas. She was blessed with six great-grandchildren: Max Medeiros, Julia Medeiros, Lauren Medeiros, Evan Carvalho, Benjamin Carvalho, and Nathan Carvalho. She was the sister of Angela Fernandes of Montreal, Canada, and the late Manuel Almeida and Norberto Garcia. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews and was affectionately called "Tia Julia" by many others whose lives she touched.
She attended school in Pico and immigrated to the United States in 1966. She worked at Elizabeth Webbing in Pawtucket, retiring in 1993. She was a communicant of Saint Anthony's Church, Pawtucket.
Julia was passionate about her faith, her family, writing poetry, and her beloved Pico. Everyone who knew her was touched by her big heart and generous spirit. Always giving selflessly to others, whether through gifts, cooking, or baking—especially her famous cookies—she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Julia's Life Celebration, which will be held with visiting hours on Friday, September 13, 2024, from 4 to 7 PM at the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 11:30 AM at St. Anthony Church, Lawn Avenue, Pawtucket. Kindly proceed directly to the church on Saturday. A procession to Swan Point Cemetery for burial will follow.
