Obituary

Jose Antonio Figueiredo, 73, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 9, 2023 at The Miriam Hospital, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Aurora (Oliveira) Figueiredo, his childhood sweetheart, and they were happily married for the past 48 years.

Born in Gouveia, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio and Adalia (Borges) Figueiredo and stepson of Lurdes Figueiredo.  He was raised by his paternal grandparents, Profirio and Candida Figueiredo. He was a veteran of the Portuguese Air Force, stationed in Africa. He moved to the United States in 1973, a country that he loved and considered his own, to include becoming a United States citizen.

With his wife by his side, Mr. Figueiredo was the owner and chef of Serra Da Estrela Restaurant in Cumberland for over 36 years. His work ethic was unmatched and he had a passion for cooking. His love for the restaurant he and his wife created with their children by his side is what brought him joy until his final days. He took great pride in treating every one of his customers and employees like family.

Jose was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. During the 1980's he was a proud active member of the Clube Juventude Lusitana, serving as the soccer teams' president, leading them to their first LASA Soccer Championship in history. He was also a common presence cooking in the hall kitchen. He was a loyal and dedicated S.L. Benfica soccer fan, but he most loved spending time with his family and friends. Those who love him will remember his strong opinions, his sense of humor, and in the end, his ability to put a smile on everyone's face. He also loved family trips and his memory will be cherished by his family, especially as they reflect on their most recent summer vacation to Portugal.

In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his son Nuno Filipe Figueiredo and his wife Vania of Lincoln, Paula Figueiredo Neves and her husband Joaquim of Cumberland; his three cherished grandchildren, Mia, Christian and Damien. He also leaves his siblings, Alzira Lazaro of Attleboro, Aurora Figueiredo of Portugal, Mario Figueiredo of Johnston, Conceicao Santos of Florida, Aurelio Figueiredo of Cumberland, Fernanda Jolicoeur of Cumberland, and Raquel Barros of Cumberland; as well as several nieces, nephews and close friends. He was the brother of the late Carlos Figueiredo.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Jose's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Friday, January 13, 2023 from 4 to 7 PM and continue on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 10AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation, 249 Roosevelt Ave STE 201, Pawtucket, RI 02860, an organization that was close to his heart after his wife's battle in surviving breast cancer.
