Cumberland

Jose T. Almeida, 83, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at The Village at Waterman Lake, Greenville, Rhode Island.  He was the beloved husband of Rosa Maria Lopes Almeida and they shared 57 years of marriage.

Born in Esmolfe, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose Almeida (Aldeia) and Maria Dos Anjos Torres.   He emigrated from Portugal in 1968, settling in Cumberland, Rhode Island where he resided for most of his life.

Mr. Almeida was employed as a tester for the Okonite Wire and Cable Company for over 30 years until his retirement in 2003.  During his employment at Okonite, Jose collected soda cans throughout the company to make an annual donation to the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy (MDA) Telethon. This was just one example of his quiet generosity for many causes, as well as individual kindness to people.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland. He enjoyed his daily walks, long bike rides, gardening, word searches and Sudoku puzzles, but most of all, spending time with his family.  He cherished Sunday afternoons when his daughters and their families gathered for dinner, a tradition that brought him immense joy.

In addition to his wife Rosa Maria, he leaves his daughters, Fatima Rodrigues and her husband Paulo of Cumberland, Ana Parsons and her husband Ray of North Smithfield, Alice Daby and her husband Bill of North Attleboro and Marcia Berthiaume and her husband Greg of North Attleboro; his nine grandchildren, Amanda Bean (Travis), Paulo Rodrigues (Megan), Julia Alexander (Trevor), Marc Parsons (Brieana), Meredith Parsons, Katherine Daby, Emily Daby, Michayla Calista (Austin), and Gregory Berthiaume; his three great-grandchildren, Peyton and Ryan Rodrigues and Maisie Bean.  He was also looking forward to the births of Baby Boy Calista and Baby Boy Alexander in the coming months; his siblings Maria da Ascensão Silva, of Lisboa, Portugal and Antonio Almeida of Seekonk, and was predeceased by five brothers Amandio Almeida of Cumberland, Manuel Almeida, Luis Almeida, Virgilio Almeida and Albano Almeida, and one sister Palmira Ferreira all of Portugal; as well as several nieces and nephews both in Portugal and the United States.

Mr. Almeida was a devoted and loving husband and father to his four girls, who miss him deeply and will forever carry the life lessons he shared with them. Above all, he cherished his wife, caring for her with the same love and devotion she so faithfully gave to him. Their marriage was rooted in deep love, mutual respect, and unwavering commitment to one another.

He often reminded his family that "everything has its time," a saying that reflected his belief in appreciating the gifts of each day, knowing how quickly they pass. He took immense pride in being a father and grandfather and was present for all of life's moments — both big and small — for his daughters and grandchildren.

He was his grandchildren's biggest supporter and could often be found on the sidelines of soccer, softball, field hockey, and football games, or in the audience at dance recitals, school plays, and concerts. Even when the days became harder for him, he always did his best to show up for his family. His family was truly blessed to have such a loving pai, vovô, and bisavô.  His legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Jose's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and continuing on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland, Rhode Island.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland, Rhode Island.  Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland, Rhode Island.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association at https://www.alz.org/ri.  Very special thanks is given to the entire staff of The Village at Waterman Lake, but especially those of the Lodge Building, the Courtyard Memory Care and Atrium facilities.  Their compassionate and loving care of our beloved dad was immeasurable.
