John P. Mycroft, 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family at home in North Providence on January 11, 2024. He was born in Providence, RI on November 18,1951 to Herbert and Jane Mycroft. He bravely battled glioblastoma with courage and grace.
John was the beloved husband and best friend of Mary Evelyn Mycroft for 46 happy years. He was a loving father and is survived by John D. Mycroft, and his wife Sarah Vukovich Mycroft, and Mary Sarah Mycroft. He cherished and was proud of his grandchildren Millie, Jack, Ben, Lily, and Rosie Mycroft.
John grew up in a happy family of seven siblings, Mary E. Whittaker of Seekonk, MA, Catherine Nojiri of Neschanic Station, NJ, Frank J. Mycroft, PhD, of Walnut Creek, CA, Jane Holden of Seekonk, MA, and William Mycroft of FL. He was also the brother of the late Herbert V. Mycroft.
John received his BA from Rhode Island College. He then achieved his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. While completing his PhD at URI, he held the position of Scholar in the United States Air Force Geophysics Scholar Program. Upon completion of his PhD, he worked as an environmental chemist until continuing his vocation in teaching.
Education was John's true passion. Prior to graduate school, John started teaching math in middle school and then high school physics. In 1988, he began teaching at the New England Institute of Technology. He took great joy in building the chemistry lab and developing the math and science curriculum over his 35 years at the school. John had the privilege of serving as Department Chairperson and later Assistant Chairperson of Math and Science at NEIT. John took great pride in being part of the college's growth and preparing students for their own careers and lives.
John's life was characterized by unwavering love for his family and kindness and humor to all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to John's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours from 4 PM to 7 PM on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, and continuing on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 8:30 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM in Mary Mother of Mankind Church, 25 Fourth Street North Providence, RI. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cumberland.
