CUMBERLAND

Joaquim Afonso, 90, of Cumberland passed away on Monday June 20, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family.  He was the husband of the late Ilda Maria Afonso.

Born in Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio Marques Leal and the late Maria Rosario dos Santos.  He moved to this country from Montalegre, Portugal, settling in the Valley Falls section of Cumberland.

He was employed with the former Owens-Corning Fiberglass Company for many years until his retirement.

Mr. Afonso was a communicant of the Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland. He was a member of the Clube Juventude Lusitana.  He was an avid gardener, but most of all he took great pride in his family.

Joaquim leaves his son, Tony Afonso and his wife Lori of Connecticut; his daughter, Maria Magalhaes and her husband Jorge of Cumberland; his three grandchildren, Shanna Magalhaes, Ashley Coughlin, and Troy Afonso and his great-grandson, Thomas Edward Coughlin IV; his siblings, Maria Santos, Joao Marques Leal, Antonio Leal, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late: Isac Leal, Domingos Leal, and Ana Afonso.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Joaquim's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Saturday, June 24, 2023, from 8 AM to 9:30 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM in the Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.
