Joan M. Steele, 87 of Cumberland, RI passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, surrounded by her daughter and granddaughters.

Born in Central Falls, RI on August 21, 1938, to the late Walter and Loretta (Angolia) Fontaine, she was known for her kindness, compassion, and selflessness. Those who knew her loved her warm spirit - and her chocolate chip cookies! Joan lived a life rich with friendship and love for those around her. Besides the title of the original extreme couponer, her most important and rewarding roles were of Mom and Bama.

Joan leaves behind her daughter Dawn LaPre (Rob), and granddaughters Kayleigh and Riley. She was predeceased by her husband George Steele. Joan joined George on their 49th wedding anniversary, as well as her late mother's birthday. She is survived by her siblings Walter Fontaine (Lily), Rosemarie Depault (Ray), Virginia Brandao (Manny), Susan DuBois (Barry), Jackie Pignolet (Paul), and many nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She is also predeceased by her brother Adelard Fontaine.

Joan showed her love for others with her delicious cooking and baking skills. She enjoyed doing puzzles and hosting Bama-ques with her friends, as well as spending time with her large family. Joan became famous on the book of faces to her friends and beyond, bringing joy to people near and far with all her Bama-isms.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Joan's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Sunday, November 30, 2025, from 4 PM to 7 PM, and continuing on Monday, December 1, 2025, at 9 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM in St. Joan of Arc Church, 3357 Mendon Road Cumberland. Burial will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery, 683 S. Main Street Attleboro, MA.
