David Christman Berg, 91, of Smithfield, was called home to eternal life on Saturday, June 6, 2026, after a lengthy battle with cancer. A prior resident of Cumberland for more than 50 years, David was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Feb. 16, 1935, a son of the late Dr. Charles and Virginia
(Christman) Berg. He attended prep school at Culver Military Academy, Culver, Ind., and was a 1957 graduate of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., where he was an active member of the Purdue Glee Club and Reamer Club. While at Purdue, Dave also participated in Army ROTC, commissioning as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army upon graduation and assigned to the 581st Transportation Company at Fort Bliss, Texas. After completing active duty, Dave served 28 years in the Army Reserve as a training officer and military instructor while assigned to the 76th Training Division stationed in Providence, R.I., and West Hartford, Conn. Dave retired from the Army in 1988 with the rank of Lt. Col., having been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Dave also completed post-graduate study at Suffolk University Law School and later worked 41 years as a claims representative and subrogation adjuster for the Aetna Casualty and Surety Co., Travelers Insurance Co., and Metropolitan Life Auto and Home.

Dave found the "Joy of the Lord" while attending a Christian retreat in 1977, at which time he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. During his lifetime, Dave was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Cumberland, and Crossroads International Church, South Attleboro, Mass., having served in various capacities as vestryman, deacon and church board member. Dave continually grew in his walk with the Lord through active church participation in music, prayer, men's fellowship, senior and nursing home ministries, and through his lifetime membership in Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International. Dave served in Full Gospel for 45 years and was a former President of the Woonsocket Chapter and former Treasurer for the Providence Chapter.

Dave was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Sandra, who passed in February 2025. Dave missed Sandra deeply and looked forward with great anticipation to their reunion in heaven. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Tom. He is survived by two brothers, Robert Berg and wife Cecelia of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Dr. William Berg and wife Linda of Monterey, Calif.; three sons, David Berg Jr. and wife Connie of Hilton Head, S.C., William Berg and wife Tamara of South Kingstown, and Christian Berg and wife Lindell of Tamaqua, Pa.; two daughters, Susan Morinville of Cumberland, and Melissa DiFilippo of Inverness, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) Mansour, Sarah Wood, Toby (Olivia) Berg, Timothy Berg, Shaina (Azrael) Fiorelli, Samantha (Bill) Jenks and Seth Morinville; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Dave's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 11 AM, followed by a Prayer Service at 11 AM in the J.J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road in Cumberland. Burial will be private. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the missions fund at Crossroads International Church, 1032 Newport Ave., South Attleboro, MA 02703.
