Obituary

Cumberland,

Dana L. Jones, 69, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. He was the husband of the late Nancy (Ballou) Jones.

Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Morse) Jones. He was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.

At a young age, Dana followed in his father's footsteps, joining the then Ashton Fire Department. Starting as a "junior firefighter" he rose to the rank of Captain, taking interest in and responsibility for the emergency medical services (EMS) and rescue operations of the Department. He worked full-time as a public safety dispatcher for the Town of Cumberland until he was hired full-time as one of six members to staff the department's ambulance. Shortly thereafter, he oversaw the transfer of EMS operations to the Town of Cumberland in the newly created Department of Rescue Service, now Cumberland Emergency Medical Services (CEMS). He served as the department's
first commanding officer holding the title of Lieutenant and then Director. He oversaw the department's transition to providing advanced life support in 1983. His tenure at the Department of Rescue Service was briefly interrupted when he was transferred to the position of Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor for the Town of Cumberland, a position
he held for two years prior to returning to the Rescue Service again as Director. He was a graduate of the Community College of Rhode Island, obtaining an associate's degree in Fire Science. He completed Emergency Medical Technician Basic, Intermediate and Cardiac certifications during his professional career. Dana was a charter member of the Local 2725 of the International Association of
Firefighters. He served a Moderator for the Ashton Fire District and as a charter member of the Cumberland Fire Commission, a position he held until his death. He was a strong advocate and supporter of the Town's Firefighting and EMS community.

He is survived by his brother Glenn Jones and his wife Frances of Cumberland. His sister-in-law, Kathleen Jones of Cumberland along with his niece and five nephews. He was the brother of the late Ross H. Jones.
