CUMBERLAND

Booklan (Lilia) L. Ang, 89, loving wife of Benjamin Ang for 64 years, passed away peacefully in the morning on Sunday, September 1, 2024 surrounded by her family.

Born in Lizhou in Fujian, China, Booklan was the eldest child of Simeon and Gloria Lee. When she was less than a year old, she emigrated to the Philippines with her parents and grew up there surrounded by her five siblings, first in Tigaon then later in Legazpi. She attended college in Manila at University of the East, graduating in October of 1959. A few months later, she met Benjamin Ang, and on February 14, 1960, they were married. Booklan worked alongside her husband Benjamin in the family business, Lyric Studio, a photography studio in Manila. Following her husband's retirement, she and Benjamin moved to the United States in 2002 and settled in Cumberland, RI. She most recently resided in Providence at Elmhurst Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, previously residing at Fogarty Manor in Pawtucket.

A congregant at the Chinese Christian Church of RI in Pawtucket, Booklan was a spirited and devoted matriarch, and with her husband Ben at her side, she could rise to any challenge. Towards the end of her life, she prided herself on being an "independent woman," enthusiastically showing those around her what she was able to accomplish. She was a passionate person, and never hesitated to tell her friends and family that they were beautiful. She took great pride in her appearance and enjoyed wearing high heels, bright and sparkling red clothing, a vibrant manicure, and showy, glittering jewelry. Always on the hunt for that "next thing" she could add to her wardrobe, she had a great love of shopping and she and her husband Ben would get up early on Black Friday in search of fresh styles. Booklan was also a dedicated martial artist. She practiced tai chi and wu shu and won many competitions.

She joins her late husband and leaves her two sons, George Ang and his wife Iris of Cumberland, RI, and Richard Ang and his wife Catherine of Medina, WA. She precedes two of her brothers and two of her sisters who reside in the Philippines. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Dillon Ang, Abby Ang, Jessie Ang, Ida Ang, Luke Ang, Richmond Ang, and Radleigh Ang and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Chinese Christian Church of RI at 333 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI from 10 AM to 11:30 AM on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Virtual attendance will be available via Zoom.
