CUMBERLAND

Antonio A. Laires, 91, of Cumberland, passed away at home on Monday, October 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Maria Irene (Ferreira) Laires. Born in Penalva do Castelo, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio and Rosalia (Almeida) Laires.

Mr. Laires was a member of the Portuguese Army during his younger years. He later moved to this country in 1977, settling in Cumberland, where he resided for most of his life.

Mr. Laires was the owner of Laires and Son Auto Sales Inc. in East Providence, a business he proudly opened with his son over 40 years ago. He was previously employed by American Insulated Wire. Antonio was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He was a talented mechanic who had a passion for working on cars. He also owned several apartment buildings and could be found working and repairing almost anything. He enjoyed the warm weather, especially at his home in Fort Myers, FL. In addition, he enjoyed reading and spending time with his family.

He leaves behind his daughter Rosalia F. Videira and her husband Helder of Cumberland, his son Jose P. Laires of Cumberland, his grandchildren Jessica Johnson and Michael Videira, his great-grandchildren Midas, Melayna, Mateo, Moses, Addilyn, Sophia, and Gavin, and his siblings Alvira Almeida, Anselmo Laires, and Noemia Correia. He was the brother of the late Violeta Loureiro, Jose Pina Laires, and Celio Laires. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Antonio's Life Celebration, which will be held with visiting hours on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 5 to 8 PM and continue on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 9 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society or Hope Hospice.
