Steven A. Garon Sr., 52 of Leigh Road passed away Wednesday at home. He was the husband of Claire M. (Chadwick) Garon.

Born in Pawtucket, he is the son of Anita B. (Cardin) Garon of Cumberland and the late John R. Garon. He was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.

Steve was the Deputy Chief of the Bellingham Fire Department since 2005 previously serving with the North Cumberland Fire Department for 27 years retiring as the Deputy Chief, a position that he served in for 16 years, he also served as Deputy Chief of the Hyannis Fire Department for a short time. Steve started his fire service career as a teenager with the former Berkley Fire Department in Cumberland leaving there as a Captain. Upon his departure from the Berkley Fire Department the rank of Captain was retired with him.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Fire Chief's Association and a former member of the Rhode Island Fire Chief's Association and the North Cumberland Firefighters Local 2722 of the I.A.F.F where he served many years on the executive board.

Steve was active in many community organization over the years.
He was an instructor for the C.E.R.T in the Town's of Cumberland and Blackstone for many years.
He was formerly a coach for the Cumberland Youth Baseball League for many years serving as president for 2 years. He was formerly an assistant coach of the Cumberland High School Wrestling Team.

Beside his wife and mother he leaves four sons; Kyle A. Garon of Cumberland; Steven A. Garon Jr., of Cumberland; Seth C. Garon of Cumberland presently serving in the US Marine Corp in Okinawa, Japan; and Shane J. Garon of Cumberland. Four brothers Raymond Garon, Peter Garon, Arthur Garon and Robert Garon all of Cumberland. Three sisters Rita Turner of Florida; Doris Boynton of Washington and Mary Jane Wink of Maine, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ernest Garon

His funeral will be held on Monday at 8:15 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. John Vianney Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Committal services will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Curran Road, Cumberland.
